The Journey
Innocent is originally from Burundi, one of the poorest countries in the world. Forced to leave his home due to unrest, Innocent travelled on foot for four arduous months, until reaching Kenya. However, his journey to safety was far from over. He then endured two years in various refugee camps, transit and detention centres, hospitals, and even periods of living on the streets.
Arriving in Australia
Innocent’s life took a hopeful turn when the United Nations recognised him as a refugee and facilitated his relocation to Australia. Upon arrival, he quickly integrated into his new community. He completed an Advanced Diploma of Legal Practice and is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Laws at Victoria University in Melbourne, where he also serves as a Student Ambassador. His academic prowess is complemented by practical experiences, including working as an Administrative Assistant at the Law Institute of Victoria, interning at Stary Norton Halphen Criminal Lawyers Specialists, and volunteering at the Flemington and Kensington Community Legal Centre.
Giving Back
Innocent’s commitment to community integration extends beyond his professional and academic roles. He is also a public speaker, focusing on the integration of African migrants, education, refugee journeys and leadership. His advocacy has led to his election as a delegate for the United Nations Peace Summit of Emerging Leaders, where he plans to discuss youth and gender issues pertinent to the African community. Looking ahead, Innocent aspires to work as a human rights lawyer at the United Nations and dreams of establishing medical centres in Burundi, specialising in HIV treatment and maternal health. He also aspires to educate Australian youth about the refugee experience and inspire them to seize every opportunity they are given.
