Face-to-Face Speaker and Refugee Week Ambassador Dalal Sleiman

Dalal’s story

Arriving in Australia

Dalal arrived in Australia as a refugee in February 1992 after enduring horrific experiences of displacement, war and conflict caused by the 1990 Gulf War. Determined to establish a new life, she immediately engaged in the Adult Migrant English Programme. She went on to obtain a bachelor’s degree in Community Development and a Graduate Certificate in Australian Immigration Law and Practice.

Giving Back

Since graduating, Dalal has been a pivotal figure in the community sector. She dedicates her expertise as a registered migration agent to assisting newly arrived migrants, refugees and people seeking asylum in Australia. Her efforts are focused on facilitating family reunifications, securing accommodation, resolving financial difficulties, and advocating for her clients to legal, educational, employment, and health agencies.
Dalal also founded the Australian Chaldean Family Welfare (ACFW) and the Chaldean Women Association in Victoria, taking a leading role in managing and organising community support activities. She regularly organises fortnightly meetings for ACFW, bringing in guest speakers to discuss settlement and mainstream services, and referring community members on to the necessary services. Furthermore, Dalal coordinates training in parenting, leadership, domestic violence, employment, and education for all ages and genders. Her outstanding contributions to community integration and support have been recognised with several awards, including the 2020 Australia Day Award for Access and Inclusion from the City of Whittlesea, and recognition from the Victorian Multicultural Commission in 2006 and 2010.
