Share a Meal, Share a Story is a community fundraising initiative of the Refugee Council of Australia. We are encouraging people to get together, share a delicious meal, and share stories that help build empathy and understanding of refugee experiences. We had initially decided to postpone Share a Meal, Share a Story for 2020, but given the easing of restrictions, we are going ahead with it.
Be sure to check out our dedicated Share a Meal, Share a Story website for all the info you need – recipes, stories, registration, and donation pages. This is a community fundraiser that helps the Refugee Council maintain our critical work in advocacy, policy, and community engagement.
What is Share a Meal, Share a Story?
Sitting around a table and enjoying food with others is a tradition that transcends differences in culture, religion, nationality, or political beliefs. Storytelling is a powerful way for people to connect and empathise with one another, simply as fellow human beings.
Often, these two things go hand in hand, as families, friends, and communities break bread and catch up, or create new stories together. During the event, you will share a meal – you can either prepare this yourself from one of the delicious recipes on our website or buy take away from somewhere that connects to this mission of Refugee Week. Then you will have the opportunity to sit with your guests and share facts regarding refugees in Australia and globally, watch a video or read a story about our refugee ambassadors and raise awareness regarding the current situations for refugees.
We have also produced an amazing cookbook filled with recipes and stories from some of our Refugee Week Ambassadors and other members of refugee communities. It is a great collection that you can get, by donation, and use at your Share a Meal, Share a Story event.
Three easy steps
1. Register your event
2. Invite your friends (and ask them to donate if they can)
3. Host your meal (either cook yourself or buy takeaway)
We understand not everyone will be able to gather in person at this time due to COVID-19, but that does not mean you can’t share a meal and a story with your loved ones. You can host your meal online if that suits you. You could send the recipe you want to prepare in advance to all your guests, and they each prepare the same meal to enjoy or you could all get takeaway from the restaurant or in the same cuisine if you live at distance from each other.
