Happy Friday everyone and welcome to day 6 of Refugee Week. We hope you’ve had a great week so far. Don’t forget to join the social media chat and let us know what you’ve been up to, using #RefugeeWeek2020 and #YearOfWelcome.
This afternoon, you can join STARTTS for their annual Humanitarian Awards, where they acknowledge and thank those people who have made an exceptional positive contribution to refugee communities in NSW.
Later on, we’ve got your Friday night sorted with our at-home movie night. We’ve joined forces with the Human Rights Arts and Film Festival (HRAFF) to bring you the incredible For Sama. Oscar-nominated and recipient of countless awards, this film is both an intimate and epic journey into the female experience of war. A love letter from a young mother to her daughter, the film tells the story of Waad al-Kateab’s life through five years of the uprising in Aleppo, Syria as she falls in love, gets married and gives birth to Sama, all while cataclysmic conflict rises around her.Her camera captures incredible stories of loss, laughter and survival as Waad wrestles with an impossible choice–whether or not to flee the city to protect her daughter’s life, when leaving means abandoning the struggle for freedom for which she has already sacrificed so much. The movie will be followed by a special post-screening message from one of the main characters, Afraa. Get your tickets here.
And of course, that’s not all. Check out our community events calendar, where today you’ll find conferences, poetry, forums and more.
