Words Without Borders

Refugee Week, day 2: Poetry, chocolate and all things in between

Welcome to day 2 of Refugee Week! Did you make it along to the amazing launch event last night?  It was an incredibly thought-provoking discussion on the intersections between the experiences of refugee and First Nations communities in Australia – specifically in relation to the idea of ‘welcome’. If you didn’t, don’t worry, you can catch up here.

Tonight, we bring you our second event in collaboration with The Wheeler Centre, “Words Without Borders: An Evening of Poetry and Spoken Word“.  Five incredible poets from refugee backgrounds will share their original work, hosted by the excellent Manal Younus. You can watch it on the Refugee Council of Australia Facebook page or on The Wheeler Centre website.

Check out our events calendar for other events taking place today and throughout the week.  This one has piqued our interest- we don’t know what “chocolate guessing” is but it sounds delicious!

Speaking of delicious, SBS Food Online have today launched a recipe video series featuring home cooks from refugee backgrounds who have made their homes in Australia.  Check out Refugee Week Ambassador Noor’s video here and head to the Share a Meal, Share a Story page to find out how you can take part in the #YearOfWelcome by enjoying some delicious food with family and friends.
