Hanse’s Story

As Refugee Week 2024 unfolds, the theme “Finding Freedom” resonates deeply with families torn apart by conflict and persecution yet bound together by an unbreakable bond of love and resilience. Among them is Hanse, a mother whose journey embodies the strength and sacrifices of refugee families striving for a better future.

With six children to care for and nurture, Hanse’s life has been a testament to the power of family. “I love my daughter, she’s my world,” she says, her voice filled with warmth and affection. Despite the challenges they’ve faced, Hanse remains steadfast in her commitment to her children, finding solace and strength in their unwavering love.

“My kids and husband give me the strength to carry on,” Hanse shares, her eyes reflecting the depth of her determination. “It’s hard to be far from them, to sacrifice and grow them from a distance, but their love fuels my resilience.”

Marrying off three of her six children, Hanse knows the weight of responsibility that comes with being a mother and provider. Yet, through it all, she finds joy and pride in her family’s achievements, celebrating each milestone with unwavering support and love.

“When I’m angry, my husband is my calm in the storm,” Hanse confides, gratitude evident in her voice. “Together, we navigate the challenges that come our way, drawing strength from each other’s presence.”

For Hanse and her husband, Hameed, the journey to finding freedom has been arduous, marked by loss and resilience. “We came to a country with laws and practices,” they reflect, their voices echoing with the weight of their experiences. Yet, amidst the uncertainty, their family remains their anchor, their guiding light through the darkest of times.

“Family is everything to me,” Hanse affirms, her words carrying the weight of a lifetime of struggles and triumphs.

“When we survived the war, all we had left was family. It was the hope of being there for each other that kept us going, that gave us the strength to rebuild and start anew.”

As Refugee Week unfolds, Hanse’s story serves as a poignant reminder of the resilience, love, and sacrifice that define refugee families. It’s a testament to the power of family to overcome adversity, to find freedom in the embrace of loved ones, and to forge a path towards a brighter tomorrow.
